This preamble is the same as that sent to new ARES applicants. I suggest that all BOD
members show a good example by requesting the check. Also request that the form and preamble be
put on the PCARS web page and in the Newsletter.

County background check form.pdf

In order to access public evacuation shelters as a volunteer, in most
Florida counties, a
simple background check is required. The form is attached in .pdf format.
You will need Adobe Acrobat reader to open it which is widely available on the web at no cost.

Print a copy of the form, complete it and have your signature witnessed

and mail the complete form to,

Ronald W Ricci

Homeland Security Coordinator

Brevard County Emergency Management

1700 Cedar Str.

Rockledge FL.32955

On the line requesting Agency Contact Person/PX# you can insert "Ronald

W Ricci " since we have never been advised of anything else and this has always worked in the pass.

All evacuation shelters in Brevard county are managed by the American

Red Cross but are in county owned schools. The Red Cross has a separate

background check system but now accepts the county's background check as meeting the criteria.

The Special Needs shelters are also in schools but are run by the county with sub contracted medical staff from the local hospitals. The county background check is mandatory for duty at these shelters.

The background check is carried out by the county sheriffs office and

merely checks if there are any outstanding warrants and if you appear on the national sexual predators list. If you are OK your name gets

forwarded to the EC as acceptable and I get a copy. This is the same

procedure used for all applicants for jobs for the county, school

system, hospital and nursing home staff etc. whether paid or volunteer.

It is now a requirement in most counties throughout Florida under the

recommendation of the Dept. of Homeland Security.
